After a season that had almost had more weather delays and cancelations than games, Wahpeton was able reach the Class A State Tournament for the first time since 2012. The tournament, which took place in Jamestown, didn’t go the way Huskie fans planned with Wahpeton losing two consecutive games to teams from the West.

After a stellar Eastern Dakota tournament that saw the Huskies finish as runners up to the eventual state champion West Fargo Sheyenne Mustangs- Wahpeton’s first game back at state was against the Dickinson Midgets, the three seed out of the West and the regular season champions. Dickinson took their first lead of the game in the top of the fourth, before tacking on three more runs in the fifth to go up 4-0. Wahpeton was able to answer back in the bottom of the fifth with a two runs to cut the lead in half. In the bottom of the sixth, Wahpeton would get another run on the board to go into the final frame trailing by one run 4-3. The Midgets proved to be too much, scoring two runs and shutting Wahpeton out in the bottom of the frame to win and advance to the Semi Finals 6-3. Caden Kappes and Nick Zach split pitching duties for Wahpeton each throwing three innings. Senior Tori Ulich lead the way with four hits.

In the Win-Or-Go Home match up on the constellation side of the bracket, Wahpeton was matched up with #1 seed out of the West Bismarck Century. The Huskies went down early, giving up two runs in the first inning. In the top of the third, the Huskies were able to score their lone run before giving up a run in the bottom of the third to make the final 3-1. Jayden King pitched arguably his best game of the season against the Patriots, striking out nine through seven innings of work.

Wahpeton’s season had more ups than downs, with the Huskies advancing past the EDC tournament and coming a game away from competing for fifth place. American Legion ball is right around the corner for the core of this season.
