A 24-year-old Fairmount man is set to face a federal charge for starting lighting a fire in the Richland County Law Enforcement Center.

Adam James Prochnow appeared in North Dakota’s U.S. District Court yesterday on an arson charge as court documents allege he used fire and explosive materials on March 1 to damage or destroy the law enforcement center.

The case against Prochnow was dismissed by the Richland County State’s Attorney on Monday, which made way for federal prosecution.

Prochnow allegedly lit a cylindrical container in the entrance of the jail and then ran before the container exploded, causing heavy smoke damage. The accused then barricated himself in his home as law enforcement surrounded the house two days after the incident at the law enforcement center.

Prochnow surrendered himself after a five-hour standoff and has been in custody at the Cass County Jail since the arrest.
