The Breckenridge Cowgirls claimed their first state tournament victory since 1980 with a sweep of the South Ridge Panthers on Friday at the Xcel Energy Center. The set scores were 25-17, 25-16 and 25-8 in the consolation bracket.

One night after Carcie Materi hit 1,000 career assists, Camryn “Killer” Kaehler lived up to her nickname with her 1,000th career kill. Kaehler, the school’s all-time kill leader, is the first Cowgirl to reach 1,000 in a career. She ended the match with a team-high 16 kills.

Abby Johnson had a monster night with one of the best serving performances in school history, ending the match with nine aces. The junior also came through for 11 kills.

Sophie Larson and Materi set up the killers for 35 kills. Larson had 18 and Materi was right behind with 17.

Riley Finkral had a quiet showing at her libero position, only coming up with 12 digs due to the Panthers not having many hitting opportunities. Kaehler and Johnson each had 10.

The win kept the 30-3 Cowgirls in the tournament as they’ll play again Saturday morning at 9 a.m. for the consolation championship. Breckenridge face either Legacy Christian Academy or Badger/Greenbush-Middle River. The pregame show gets started at 8 a.m.
