Breckenridge had a 12-8 lead in the final two minutes of their regular season finale in Pelican Rapids, but a blocked punt was recovered in the end zone for a touchdown to give the Vikings a 16-12 victory on Wednesday.

Pelican Rapids struck first with a 32-yard scoring connection from Timmy Guler to Peyton Blakeway. The junior receiver ripped the ball out of the hands of a Cowboy defensive back to go in for the score. Guler called his own number to go in for the two-point conversion.

Breckenridge got on the board in the final minute of the second quarter on a halfback pass. Cam Nieto, who started at quarterback in multiple games this year for the Cowboys, took the toss and delivered a 15-yard strike to his cousin Alex Sanchez in the end zone. Nieto got the carry on the two-point conversion, but was stopped short.

Breckenridge took the lead in the third quarter off a 32-yard run by Nieto and the two-point conversion was stopped again to make it a 12-8 game. The junior running back went for over 100 yards for the second game in a row with 117 yards on 23 carries.

The Cowboys had a couple minutes to regain the lead, but a deep pass by Nieto was intercepted with a minute left and the Vikings knelt on it to run the clock out.

The 4-4 Breckenridge squad has their first playoff game on Tuesday at 6 p.m. They’re likely locked in at the four spot, giving them a home game. Make sure to check back to kbmwnews.com for when their opponent is announced.
