The Wahpeton Huskies were able win on Senior Night, beating the Turtle Mountain Community Braves by a score of 69-34 and advancing to 5-3 on the season.

Blake Schafer was able get the scoring going early with a 47 yard run on the first play from scrimmage. Schafer and the Huskies’ offense were able to run the option all night long leading to multiple big gains. The Huskies score with 10:20 left in the first quarter would mark the last time the game was tied at any point. The extra point was good to make it 7-0.

After failed onside attempted, the Braves were able to score on a 13 yard touchdown pass, but the failed extra point made it 7-6. Then, on the first play off the kickoff, Schafer would throw his first touchdown pass of the night to a streaking Colin Samuels for the 42 yard touchdown. The extra point made it 14-6 Huskies with 3:19 left in the first quarter.

The Huskies would stay aggressive, attempting the on side again. This time, Wahpeton was able to recover and Blake Schafer and Caden Kappes would connect for the 40 yard touchdown with 3:09 left in the first quarter. The extra point was no good, making the score 20-6 at the end of the quarter.

Freshmen Treyton Mauch would play much of the game in the backfield with Schafer starting in the second quarter. Mauch was able to let loose a 61 yard run up the right sideline to give the Huskies a 26-6 score. Turtle Mountain wan’t done however, being able to score on a 13 yard touchdown pass, with a successful two point conversation to make it 26-14.

The Huskies were able to score once more on a 17 yard connection between Schafer and Kappes to give the Huskies a 34-14 advantage going into halftime. At the break, the Braves ran almost twice as many plays as the Huskies (41-20), but trailed by almost three touchdowns.

The Huskies started with the ball to start the second half, and Schafer kept the momentum going. From 11 yards out, Schafer kept the ball himself on the option and ran up the middle for the score. 41-14 with 10:31 left in the third quarter.

For the Braves, Freshmen Tyler Mortin was their man offensive producer. Mortin was able to break off a handful of runs before scoring with 7:19 left in the third quarter to cut the lead to twenty, 40-20.

Schafer scored his third rushing touchdown of the night from four yards out, and a successful two point conversation made it 48-20.

Mortin would score twice more in the game- once in the third quarter on a 61 yard run to cut the lead to 48-26 and once in the fourth quarter cut the lead to 30 points.

With the game out of reach and the clock continuing to run, Mauch returned a kickoff 80 yards to make the final score 69-34. 

The Huskies have their final home game next week as they take on Fargo North. Kickoff with be a 7pm on KBMW
