The Wahpeton Huskies came up short against St. Mary’s Central Saints 51-20.

In the first quarter, the Saints were able to drive down the field and score to start the game on a four yard run by Fullback Will Lengenfelder. The field extra point made it a 6-0 game with 7:28 left in the quarter.

One the next Husky possession, on fourth and four from the 24 yard line Quarterback Blake Schafer was able to connect with Caden Kappes. With the extra point the Huskies would take their only lead of the game 7-6 with 3:16 left in the first quarter.

Head Coach Wade Gilbertson played aggressive, but the gamble didn’t pay off. On the kickoff, Wahpeton attempted the onside kick which was recovered by St. Mary’s. The next play QB Nick Schumacher connected with Nate Fedorchak for the 51 yard score. The two point conversion was successful to give the Saints 14-7 lead with 3:04 left in the first quarter.

The Saints were able to score again early in the second quarter from 37 yards out on the made field goal to make it 17-7 with 11:01 in the half.

Schafer and Kappes connected again to cut the lead to three on the 15 yard score. With 3:21 left in the half Wahpeton trailed 17-14. The Saints wouldn’t go away though, and from one yard, Senior QB Nick Schumacher scored from one yard out to give the Saints a ten point lead going into half time 24-14.

St. Mary’s took the open kick to start the half, but neither side was able to score until Isaac Vandal was able to score with 3:27 left in the third quarter to make it 31-14 after the extra point.

Early in the fourth quarter, Vandal did it again from one yard out to put the Saints up 38-14 with 11:56 left in the game.

In a big hole, the Huskies were able to get on the board again with Schafer and Kappes’ third touchdown connection of the day. The two point conversation failed to make it 38-20. Again the Huskies attempted the onside conversion and again the Saints were waiting for it.

On the first play from scrimmage Schumacher was able connect with his big slot receiver  Brit Senftner for the 55 yard touchdown to make it 44-20 after the extra point attempted failed.  The Saints were able to score one more time with 4:51 in the game to make it 51-20.

The Huskies take on Fargo South High School next week at home.

Caden Kappes with 3 Touchdown scores was the Essentia Health Player of the Game.
