A pair of turnovers in the red zone by the Breckenridge Cowboys were deciding factors in their season opener against Otter Tail Central, leading to a 22-8 Bulldog win in Breckenridge on Friday.
On the Cowboys’ opening drive, Tanner Arndt nabbed an interception in the end zone and made a big return to set his team up for their first scoring drive. The other turnover came in the second half with Breckenridge down 14-8 when a mishandled handoff inside the 5 yard line was recovered by OTC.
Following the first turnover of the game, Calvin Stueve went in for a two-yard score to make it a 6-0 game. The Cowboys took their lone lead of the game when Cameron Nieto broke free for a 75-yard score and the two-point conversion rush by James Mertes gave BHS the short lived 8-6 lead.
The final two touchdowns of the night were scored on short runs by Arndt. The first came late in the second quarter on a QB sneak and the second one was a sweep from three yards out in the fourth quarter.
Next up for Breckenridge (0-1) is another 7 p.m. home game on Friday against Parkers Prairie.
