
The Wahpeton Huskies football team opened their season with a dominant home win over Grand Forks Red River, routing the Roughriders by a score of 30-8.
Blake Schafer tossed five touchdown passes for Wahpeton with three of the scoring strikes landing in the hands of Caden Kappes. The junior wide receiver scored on catches of 38, 7 and 11 yards.
Schafer found Tori Uhlich for a 12-yard TD on fourth and goal and Beau Arenstein reeled in a 38-yard touchdown toss.
The Huskies were also locked in on the defensive side of the ball, forcing five turnovers on the night. Jacob Berndt had a hand in three of the takeaways, picking off two passes while also diving on a fumble. Nathan Worrel had a fumble recovery of his own and Riley Schmit nabbed an interception.
It was the first time the two teams played each other in football in more than 10 years as they are now both members of 11-man Class A.
The Huskies take their 1-0 record to Watford City. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3.
