MSHSL approves winter sports state tournament formats

State tournaments are returning to Minnesota high school athletics.
After no state tournaments were held in the fall due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Minnesota State High School League on Thursday voted to approve recommendations for dates, sites and some format changes to all winter state events.
The state wrestling tournament will be March 22nd through the 25th with no location announced. The entire state tournament for each class will be competed on a single day with each class having its own day. The team tournaments will be each morning with the individual tournaments in the afternoon and evening. Each weight class in the individual tournament will only have eight wrestlers.
State hockey will be played March 26th through April 5th at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
Girls quarterfinals will be March 26-27 and boys quarterfinals March 30th and 31st. The girls semifinals will be April 1st and the boys April 2nd with all state championships on April 3rd.
The boys and girls state basketball tournaments will start March 30th and conclude April 10th.
All quarterfinals will be at regional sites. The semifinals and finals will be April 6th through the 10th at the Target Center with semifinals running Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and the championship games on Friday and Saturday.
There was no word on how many fans will be allowed into each event. Minnesota currently has a limit of 150 fans for all sporting events.
