Former Wahpeton mayor Meryl Hansey passed away on Tuesday, according to an announcement from the city. He was 84.

Hansey was mayor of Wahpeton from 2014 to 2017, before stepping down due to a health issue in 2017. He served the city in an official capacity for 23 years as both a councilman and mayor.

Wahpeton mayor Steve Dale, who took over for Hansey in 2017, said all flags will be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Friday to honor the former mayor.

Hansey was born in Bowman County, according to his obituary, and served in the U.S. Army.

Hansey also served Richland County and the county’s chief correctional officer while also holding the job of Richland County deputy.

Hansey’s funeral will be Friday, Dec. 18 in a private service according to the Vertin-Munson Funeral Home website. A viewing of the live stream of the service in available at vertinmunson.com at 1 p.m.
