The Minnesota State High School League board of directors approved three winter/spring calendar models Thursday afternoon.

According to MSHSL Media Specialist John Millea, if the state shutdown is not extended, winter sports will start practice Dec. 21. If the shutdown is extended, the start date will be either Jan. 4 or Jan. 18.

If the practices begin Dec. 21, the first games will take place on Jan. 4. If the start date is Jan. 4, the first games would be Jan. 18.

Even with the MSHSL decision, the state of Minnesota has the decision to allow sports to resume and whether Minn. Governor Tim Walz ends or extends his executive order halting all youth sports through Dec. 18.

The final date for all winter competition is April 3 for all models with springs sports starting shortly thereafter.

Section tournaments for wrestling would start on March 8 with hockey and basketball a week later.

The models have room for 70 percent of the normal contests for basketball, wrestling and football with a limit of two contests per week. That would be expanded to three contests over the final two weeks to allow for postponed games. State tournaments would follow the sections with no firm dates mentioned as of Thursday.
