The Breckenridge Cowboys returned a kickoff and punt return for a touchdown before taking an offensive snap en route to a 54-0 win over Staples-Motley on Wednesday to end the regular season.

The Cowboys finish 5-1 and await the Section 6A tournament seeding, which will be determined Friday. The Section 6A tournament begins Tuesday with the semifinals on Nov. 27 and ends with the championship on Friday, Nov. 27 in the Fargodome.

James Mertes returned the game’s opening kickoff 74 yards for a touchdown and Dylan Bernotas added a 45-yard punt return for a touchdown less than 3 minutes into the game for a 14-0 Cowboys lead.

Breckenridge scored three more touchdowns in the quarter for a 34-0 lead after 12 minutes.

Jacob Vizenor later added a 65-yard punt return for a score as the Cowboys’ special teams dominated the night.

Vizenor also had touchdown catches of 22 and 48 yards.

Daniel Erlandson led the Cowboys’ 208-yard rushing attack with 62 yards on eight carries and scored one touchdown. Erlandson also had two receptions for 39 yards from his fullback position.

Mertes added 43 yards on the ground while Cooper Yaggie had 30. Ten Cowboys got a rushing attempt in the game.

Yaggie was again solid in the passing game, going 6 for 8 for 97 yards and three touchdowns.
