North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance announced on Tuesday that he is declaring for the NFL Draft.
Lance, a third-year sophomore, still has two years of eligibility remaining and becomes one of the rare FCS players to come out after a sophomore season.
Lance led NDSU to a 16-0 season last year and the program’s eighth national championship in nine seasons. The freshman threw 28 touchdown passes with no interceptions and became the first freshman to be named winner of the Walter Payton Award as the FCS’s top player.
According to Yahoo Sports, Lance told NDSU coach Matt Entz on Monday, two days after leading the Bison to a 39-28 win over Central Arkansas in the team’s only fall football game. The Bison will play the rest of their schedule this spring.
Lance is projected to be a top-10 pick in next spring’s NFL Draft and is rated by ESPN’s Todd McShay as the second-best quarterback in the draft.
