Wahpeton’s home opener and Senior Night was spoiled by Hazen, North Dakota, in a 22-20 overtime loss on Friday, Sept. 4.
The Bison scored on their first possession in the overtime and made it an eight-point game with the two-point conversion. The Huskies came back with a Blake Schafer one-yard scoring strike to Dez Munezero, but Schafer’s throw on the two-point conversion was off the mark to end the game.

Treyton Link caught the first TD for Wahpeton on a 34-yard long ball on the first play of the second quarter. Munezero caught the two-point conversion as the hosts took an 8-0 lead into halftime.
The Bison came out in the second half and tore it up with their ground game. Hazen took the lead with a pair of scoring drives as they finished the day with 239 rushing yards as a team.
Schafer came up with big completion after big completion in the final three minutes to rally his squad. Caden Kappes had the longest reception on the drive with a 39-yard leaping grab on a first and 41. The sophomore receiver hauled in seven passes for a game-high 152 yards.
Schafer capped off the drive by calling his own number and scrambling in for a one-yard TD with 40 seconds left to force OT.
