The Minnesota State High School League voted on Tuesday to move several fall sports – including football and volleyball – to the spring and created a four-season sports calendar in dealing with COVID-19.

The MSHSL voted to move football and volleyball from its traditional fall timeline to the spring starting in late March and running through mid May. The summer sports will now be played in June and July.

The decisions also included that the seasons will be shorter with fewer games with no scrimmages and that postseason plans for each sports will be determined at a later date. The league did vote that football and volleyball will be able to hold practices this fall.

The moves means that the traditional springs sports – baseball, softball and track and field – will now run in June and July.

Falls sports including girls and boys soccer, cross-country and swimming and diving will be held as scheduled but with fewer events and participants.
