James Harry “Kibo” Kath passed away unexpectedly Sunday, March 8, 2026 at his home in Hankinson, ND at the age of 82. Visitation will be Friday, March 13, 2026 from 9 – 11 am followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at Emmanuel United Church of Christ, Hankinson, ND.
James Harry Kath was born December 9, 1943 in Breckenridge, MN, the son of William and Meta (Gustman) Kath. James attended country and public school and graduated from Hankinson High School in 1962. He married the love of his life Sharon Odegard on May 14, 1965 in Sisseton, SD. After 53 years of marriage James was reunited with his beloved wife Sharon who passed away March 26, 2019.
James worked for Bradbury Construction, Aberdeen, SD, Komatz Construction based in St. Peter, Minnesota with his dear friend Gerald Wirtz. He also worked for the Richland County Highway Department. While working for the county he farmed and operated road grader for Waldo Township. After 37 years of dedicated service, he retired from Richland County.
James found much joy in fishing, hunting, singing karaoke and going to the casino. Above all he enjoyed spending time with family and friends, telling stories and meeting new people. He will be remembered for his boisterous laugh that could fill any room and bring a smile to anyone’s face. James leaves behind a legacy of laughter, having never met a stranger who didn’t become a friend.
James is survived by his 4 sons, Troy, Torrey (Denise), Terry (Andrea), Jimmy Jr. Kath all of Hankinson, ND; 2 daughters Tanya (Brian) Lick, Rosholt, SD, Dawn Kath, Fargo, ND and special friend Lyle Muehler. 10 grandchildren: Amber, Alyssa, Taylor, Thomas, Dylan, Kaytlin, Taiha, Jake, Brandon and Autum; 4 great grandchildren: Parker, Tori, Soren and Nash; 2 sisters: Patty Moyer, San Diego, CA, Kathy (Rick) Ogg, Arizona; 5 brothers-in-law: Elwood (Diana) Odegard, Gwinner, ND, Dale (Carol) Odegard, Dennis (Barb) Odegard, Kevin (Danene) Odegard and Lynn (Michelle) Odegard all of Milnor, ND.
Those waiting for him in Heaven include his parents, wife Sharon, daughter-in-law Audrey Kath, two sisters Marie Scheller, Lila Ehrens, two brothers William and Russell Kath, special aunt and uncle Charlie, and Mabel Milbrandt.
