Cowgirls headed back to section semis following 86-53 quarterfinal win

The second-seeded Breckenridge Cowgirls racked up a season-high in points Thursday, knocking seventh-seeded Lake Park-Audubon out of the Section 6A Tournament with an 86-53 home win. 

Freshman guard Ava Jaehning made 5 of 6 three-pointers and scored a career-high 21 points on nine shots. The tenacious defender added four rebounds and two steals.

Senior guard Johnica Bernotas also delivered from deep, knocking down 4 of 6 threes on her way to 19 points. The North Dakota State College of Science signee added three rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Senior guard Emily Gowin added 15 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Gowin dished out four assists and swiped a pair of steals. Senior guard/forward Parker Yaggie tallied nine points, three rebounds, three assists and a game-high five steals.

The junior post tandem of Sienna Fobb and Mariah Koltes combined for eight points, nine rebounds and four assists. Junior small forward Piper Jaehning added eight points.

Thursday’s victory slides Breckenridge (21-7) into the section semifinals against third-seeded Underwood (21-7) at 7:45 p.m. in Minnewaska. The Cowgirls defeated the Rockets, 82-46, in their lone regular-season meeting Feb. 17. 

Top-seeded Hillcrest Lutheran Academy (26-2) will face fourth-seeded Rothsay (22-6) in the first semifinal game at 6 p.m.
