Huskies heat up to avoid region upset, advance to semifinals

The third-seeded Wahpeton Lady Huskies survived a scare Monday to open the Region 1A Tournament, overcoming a 37-24 halftime deficit to defeat the sixth-seeded Northern Cass Jaguars, 65-48.

Sophomore forward Claire Woods was held to four points in the first half, before exploding for 22 of her game-high 26 in the final 16 minutes. Woods scored a dozen straight to begin the third quarter, as Wahpeton outscored Northern Cass 23-4 in the frame and 41-11 in the half to end the Jaguars’ season.

Eighth grade point guard Piper Nelson scored 16 points, seventh grade guard Ashlynne Max added nine, and junior guard Cambri Mauch tallied eight points and a game-high seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Gracie Falck added three steals and four rebounds. 

Wahpeton advances to play second-seeded Kindred at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday on AM 1450 KBMW. Robert Wanek Jr. has the call from North Dakota State University.
