The Breckenridge basketball teams split in Barnesville Friday night in a rescheduled doubleheader that was supposed to take place Thursday night. The Cowgirls struggled to get their offense going in the second half of a 69-57 loss and the Cowboys followed it up with a 78-53 conference victory.

Cowgirls

Breckenridge took a six-point lead into halftime but were out scored in the second half 36-19.

Parker Yaggie and Sydni Roberts paced the Cowgirls in the opening half with 10 apiece. Yaggie was held to four in the second half with all of the points coming at the stripe while Roberts was scoreless in the second period.

Piper Jaehning was the lone bright spot offensively for Breckenridge in the second half as she scored 13 of her team-high 15 points in the second half. Outside of Jaehning’s scoring flurry and Yaggie’s free throws, the Cowgirls were held to two points in the half.

The two-headed monster of Ava Follingstad and Abby John went for 27 and 25, respectively to spearhead the Trojan attack.

The 5-3 Cowgirls move on to another Friday bout with a 3:30 p.m. home bout against Wheaton.

Cowboys

The Breckenridge Cowboys got things clicking on both ends to take a 10-point lead into halftime before pulling away with a run in the second half.

JD Gomez put on a show in the opening half with 15 of his 22 points. He put an exclamation point on the first half with a buzzer-beating 3 to make it a 42-32 game heading into the locker room.

Aidan Sanchez, who got the Cowboys off to a hot start with a couple early buckets, stole the show in the second half with 16 of his game-high 24 points. The sophomore guard hit a pair of triples and eight field goals inside the arc in the strong showing.

Breck brought four players off the bench throughout the game and all of them finished with multiple field goals. One of the reserves, Jaxson Riggs, had the standout moment of the second half with a behind-the-back dime to Sanchez for a corner 3.

The 4-3 Cowboys are right back in action in a Section 6A clash with Underwood at 9:45 a.m. Saturday at Concordia College.
