The Wahpeton football season came to a close last Friday night in Fargo when the Huskies lost 41-12 to the Fargo North Spartans. Even though the Huskies weren’t able to raise the trophy to end the season, many of this year’s team will forever be immortalized in the Wahpeton Athletics history books after breaking and setting new records.
Senior Quarterback Blake Schafer broke two records this season. The quarterback set the single season record for passing yards with 2,752. In the Huskie offense, Schafer was able to use his arm to make plays to receivers down the field as well as use his tight ends and running backs in the short game to help power the Huskies offense to multiple double digit victories. Schafer was also able to set the single season passing touchdown record with 32. The Huskie offense this season was a tough one to beat, winning multiple games by more than two scores.
Receiver Caden Kappes left his mark on the season as well. The Junior wideout broke the single season total receiving yard, setting the new record at 879. Kappes also set two touchdown records, scoring 19 this season as well as grabbing three scores on four separate occasions- another record. Kappes was able to do all of that, even with opponents double teaming him most nights.
Senior WR Tori Uhlich was another target that helped Schafer set records. Uhlich’s best game back against Grand Forks Central where he was able to set the single game receiving yards record with 178 in a Wahpeton loss.
The North Dakota Bowl will be played November 12th in Fargo with the 11A title beginning at 2:30pm on WDAY.
