
Wahpeton American Legion Post 20 rallied from two different deficits to beat Breckenridge Post 53 6-3 on Sunday in the annual 4th of July game at John Randall Field.
Wahpeton won its 14th straight game with the win and is 22-2 on the season.
Breckenridge saw its five-game winning streak snapped and falls to 13-4.
Breckenridge took a 2-0 lead in the third inning when Brayden Wahl doubled home both Cam Nieto and Emmit Vig with two outs in the inning.
Wahpeton responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, also coming on a two-out double by Caden Hockert to score Isaac Loosmore and Ethan Manock to tie the game.
Wahl singled to lead off the sixth for Post 53 and scored on a double by Cam Nieto for a 3-2 lead.
Post 20 came right back with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead.
Gavin Schroeder singled and Loosmore doubled to lead off the rally. Jackson Fliflet and Manock both then walked to force in the tying run. Hunter Wamre singled with one out to score Schroeder and Riley Thimjon’s squeeze bunt scored Manock.
Wahpeton had seven hits in the game and Breckenridge six.
Wahl finished with two hits and two RBIs to lead Breckenridge while Loosmore had two hits and two RBIs for Wahpeton. Hockert also drove in two runs.
Wamre started for Wahpeton and gave up two runs in five innings while striking out four. Manock worked the final two innings for the win, striking out four of the last six batters he faced.
Cooper Yaggie took the loss for Breckenridge. Yaggie pitched into the sixth inning and struck out nine while giving up six runs.
Both teams return to action on Wednesday. Breckenridge hosts Barnesville in a single game at 6:30 p.m. at Cowboy Field while Wahpeton plays a doubleheader at the West Fargo Vets beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Prior to the game, Wahpeton honored the 1996 state championship team on the 25th anniversary of the title.
Wahpeton beat Grand Forks twice in the championship games in Williston to win the title. Fourteen of the 18 team members were back to be honored and former coach Wayne Gripentrog threw out the first pitch prior to the game.
