Wahpeton American Legion Post 20 opened the 2021 season on Friday by sweeping Valley City in Valley City in a N.D. Class A East Region doubleheader.

Wahpeton won 15-2 in 5 innings and 8-4.

Post 20 got a 5-hitter from Jayden King in the first game. King struck out 5 while allowing 2 runs.

Ethan Manock hit a 2-run home run and drove in 4 runs to help lead the Post 20 offense. Tori Uhlich and Caden Hockert also had 2 hits while Caden Kappes and Jackson Fliflet drove in two runs.

In the second game the two teams were tied 2-2 after five innings with the game being delayed for 75 minutes in the bottom of the fifth for rain.

Wahpeton then scored 5 times in the top of the sixth inning to take command.

Kappes had 3 hits from the leadoff spot in the batting order with Uhlich, Fliflet, Manock, Gavin Schroeder and Josiah Hoffman each driving in a run.

Wahpeton used 3 pitchers in the game with Hunter Wamre working the first 5 innings to get the win, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits and striking out 6.

Hockert pitched in the sixth and Kappes got the final two outs of the game.

Wahpeton plays its first home games of the season on Tuesday by hosting the Fargo Bombers in an East Region doubleheader beginning at 5:30 p.m. at John Randall Field.
