In a 2020 season filled with adversity due to COVID-19, the Breckenridge Cowboys battled through to get a chance at a Section 6A Championship.

With all Minnesota sports shutting down on Saturday, Nov. 21, Breckenridge was able to schedule Otter Tail Central for a title bout on Cowboy Field on Friday, Nov. 20.

The game was a back-and-forth affair loaded with big plays, but the Cowboys pulled away from the Bulldogs for a 49-30 victory. It was the first section title for the school since 2008.

Jacob Vizenor and Cooper Yaggie put on a show in their final game as Cowboys, contributing on all seven of the BHS touchdowns. Vizenor caught a trio of TDs and also had two rushing scores. Yaggie tossed all three of the passes to score Vizenor while calling his own number for a pair of touchdowns on the ground.

When the teams played in the season opener, Breckenridge handled OTC for a 46-16 win. A completely different Bulldogs squad, riding a four-game winning streak, came to town with revenge on their mind. Both teams’ offenses scored on their first three possessions in the opening half with the home team going into halftime up by a point.

Vizenor went in from 15 yards out of the backfield for the first touchdown of the night, took a push pass 62 yards in the second quarter and capped off the half with a 46-yard receiving touchdown.

The Cowboy defense came up with their first stop of the night in the third quarter and Cooper Yaggie made it a two-score game by running in a TD and the ensuing two-point conversion.

The score was 27-24 heading into the fourth quarter and it was all BHS the rest of the way. Yaggie and Vizenor hooked for their third scoring connection of the night and each of the seniors tacked on another rushing score to close it out.

Breckenridge (6-1) bids farewell to 15 seniors. Seven of them have been mainstays on the varsity squad for the last three years with Yaggie and Daniel Erlandson even seeing time as freshmen.

The Class of 2021 played a massive role in getting BHS into the section title game last season and coming into this year they’ve preached “Unfinished business.” Now with another section championship plaque added to the trophy case, their message has changed to “Business finished.”
