Following a winless season in 2019, Wahpeton found themselves in a position to move on to the postseason with a win against Central Cass on Saturday, Oct. 24.

In a win-or-go-home battle, the Squirrels rallied for a comeback to end the Huskies’ season with a 32-30 victory in Wahpeton.

Wahpeton led 30-18 heading into the fourth quarter when Central Cass caught fire. After Owen Wiersma scored a six-yard touchdown to tie the game at 30 with 38 seconds remaining, Brendan Maasjo rolled out to the right and fired a pass into a Wahpeton defender’s hands near the right sideline. The pass bounced off the defender and into Jake Deutsch’s hands for the winning two-point conversion.

The Huskies were shorthanded heading into the game with 15 of their players having to quarantine due to COVID-19 protocols. That left them in an even bigger bind when multiple key players suffered injuries throughout the game.

Dez Munezero, who was coming off a three-score performance the week prior, went out with a bang in his final game as a Huskie. He got his team on the board with a 28-yard touchdown reception from Blake Schafer and at the beginning of the second half he took an interception to the house. Munezero also had a fumble recovery as he gave the Squirrels fits from his cornerback position.

Schafer also tossed two more scoring strikes in the game. One to Collin Samuels on a rollout from 64 yards out and Tori Uhlich reeled in a TD for an 11-yard score.

The loss ended the high school football careers of seniors Logan Gjerdevig, Treyton Link, Jordan Miller, Munezero and Tanner Thiel.

The five seniors are big losses for the squad, but the bright spot for the Huskies is they’ll return nearly their entire roster to build on this year’s 1-7 campaign.
